The History of Yo Barber
Yo Barber holds a proud and deep-rooted place in the Bacchus Marsh community, with a history spanning 80 years, originating in 1945.
Originally known simply as “The Barbershop of Bacchus Marsh,” it is the OG - the original barbershop of the town. For many years, it was the only place locals went for a proper cut and shave. Over the decades, the shop passed through a handful of different owners, each continuing the tradition of quality service that Bacchus Marsh came to know and love.
For 80 years, this little barbershop has been a quiet constant in Bacchus Marsh.
Our story started back in 1945, when we were known simply as "The Barbershop of Bacchus Marsh." Back then, we were the only chairs in town for a proper cut and a friendly chat. Over the decades, a few different hands have held the clippers, but the heart of the shop, our love for this community and good old-fashioned service, has never changed.
We’ve moved down the road a couple of times over the years. We started out opposite the hospital on Grant Street, spent a long time on the corner at number 64, and eventually settled into our current home at 60A Grant Street.
There is something really special about working inside these walls; our beautiful, charming building has been standing strong for about 130 years.
In 2016, we turned a new page and became Yo Barber. The name is deeply close to our hearts. It was chosen by our owner, Rachel Middlebrook, to honour her dear friend & client Rubin, affectionately known as "Yo Rubin", who we sadly lost around the time Rachel took over. In another beautiful way, "Yo" also means "I". It serves as a gentle daily reminder that taking care of yourself is where true well-being begins.
When you step through our doors, we want you to slow down, take a breath, and dedicate a little time to your own physical and mental wellness.
We’ve grown a bit since those early days. Moving to 60A allowed us to welcome more beautiful faces, with a wonderful, energetic team.
We also realised that looking after people goes beyond a great haircut. To help you unwind, Rachel slowly expanded our space to include a soothing Salt Therapy Room. More recently, we opened Recreate and Recovery, a gentle space for traditional steam saunas, cold plunges, and breath work.
We are proud to be the original barbershop of Bacchus Marsh. We will always honour where we came from, while gently growing and evolving to look after the community we love so much.
